Communion - Communion Dresses

The First Communion or the First Holy Communion is a Catholic ceremony by the Catholic church. First Communion is typically celebrated by children around the age of seven or eight, or when they have reached the age of reason. It is the same for boys and girls. The child must also be capable of participating in the sacramental life of the Roman Catholic Church.

First Communion follows the sacraments of baptism and reconciliation. If a person has not been baptized as baby or child they will usually be baptized shortly before their First Communion. Special clothing and dresses are usually worn. The clothing or dress is often white to symbolize purity of the soul which has been cleansed of sin with the Sacrament of Penance. For that reason, the Communion dress should be sweet, simple and modest. Some church’ s require a small sleeve or jacket for their communion. A girls First Communion dress often has a veil, typically gloves are not worn for the ceremony but often selected for afterwards. In some communities the practice of buying a First Communion dress has become increasingly expensive while in other communities it more common for girls to wear First Communion dresses that have been handed down through the family.
